Recommended Reading: Ending the Vortex of Misery in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside

The Globe and Mail has published an important editorial examining Vancouver’s response to addiction, mental illness, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Downtown Eastside.

The editorial argues that the current approach has placed too much emphasis on managing the immediate harms of addiction without providing a clear and accessible path toward treatment, recovery, and long term stability.

These issues directly affect the people who live and work in Gastown and the surrounding Downtown Eastside. They also raise difficult but necessary questions about public health, public safety, government accountability, and whether existing policies are producing meaningful improvements for vulnerable residents or the wider community.

The Gastown Residents Association encourages residents, business owners, community organizations, and elected officials to read the editorial and consider the arguments it presents.
