GRA address to Mayor Sim and Vancouver City Council regarding;
Motion 2. Enhancing Public Safety through Real-Time Access to the City’s Traffic Camera
The GRA is in favour of the motion put forward by Councillor Montague and Councillor Meiszner on enhancing public safety through real-time access to the City’s traffic cameras.
When we first read this motion, we were actually very surprised to learn that the VPD didn’t have access to the City’s traffic cameras already, as it seems like such a valuable tool for public safety.
One such traffic camera is located at the very entrance to Gastown where Richards, Water, and Cordova streets converge.
That camera is also very near the area where a female tourist was violently attacked by a random assailant recently, which should serve as a reminder that if that, or any other traffic camera, could help prevent such attacks from happening in the future, then it is our collective responsibility to use them.
The GRA’s top priority is the fight against crime and social disorder in our neighbourhood, so we will always support motions which can aid the VPD in that battle.
Thank you Councillors Montague and Meiszner for putting this motion forward, the GRA fully supports it.
